Lou Reid, a prominent figure in the bluegrass music scene, has made significant contributions to the genre through his exceptional talent and dedication. Alongside his band, the Carolina Bluegrass Band, Reid has captivated audiences with their unique blend of traditional and contemporary bluegrass music.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Lou Reid, born Louis Reid Pyrtle on September 13, 1954, in Union Grove, North Carolina, grew up on a tobacco farm. His love for bluegrass music was ignited at a young age when his father took him to see Flatt & Scruggs. Reid’s early musical journey began with the band Bluegrass Buddies, where he played acoustic bass.

Career Highlights

Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver

In 1979, Reid joined Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, playing bass guitar. The band, consisting of Lawson, Reid, Terry Baucom, and Jimmy Haley, recorded three albums together.

Ricky Skaggs Band

From 1982 to 1986, Reid was a member of the Ricky Skaggs Band, where he played multiple instruments and provided harmony vocals.

The Seldom Scene

Reid joined The Seldom Scene in 1986 as the lead singer and guitarist, replacing Phil Rosenthal. He left the band in 1993 to tour with Vince Gill and Vern Gosdin but returned in 1996 after the death of John Duffey.


In 2008, Reid joined the bluegrass supergroup Longview, recording the album “Deep in the Mountains” with other notable musicians.

Lou Reid and Carolina

In 1992, Lou Reid formed his band, Carolina, with lifelong friend Terry Baucom and Marcus Smith. The band released several albums, including “Carolina Blue,” “Carolina Moon,” and “Blue Heartache”. Christy Reid joined the band in 2002, initially as a guitar player and later as a bass player.

Carolina Bluegrass Band

The Carolina Bluegrass Band, based in North Carolina, has gained recognition for their exceptional performances and dedication to preserving the bluegrass tradition. The band has released multiple albums and received numerous awards, including Entertainers of the Year and Bluegrass Band of the Year.
